Singareni supplying a lion’s share of its coal to thermal stations in TG

Coal is being loaded into wagons of a railway rake at a SCCL’s coal handling plant in Telangana. | Photo Credit: By Arrangement The erratic monsoon due to the impact of El Nino conditions is resulting in increased energy demand across the country, making the thermal power companies, including the ones of TG-Genco, scout for additional coal supplies to meet the rise in demand.The TG-Genco has recently addressed letter to a few coal companies in the public sector, including Coal India Ltd, seeking an additional 5 million tonnes of coal supplies to meet the increasing energy demand and to overcome the efficiency problems with low-grade coal. The State public sector coal company Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) has, however, decided to cater to the needs of the local demand first.Accordingly, the company has supplied about 90% of its coal dispatches during August to the thermal power stations of TG-Genco. Officials of SCCL stated on Tuesday that out of over 4.05 million tonnes of coal supplied to thermal power stations having coal linkage with Singareni, about 3.62 million tonnes was supplied to thermal stations within Telangana.Several power utilities across the country have written to Singareni seeking coal supplies this season to meet the increasing energy consumption. Although supplying coal to other States offers commercial opportunities, Singareni is giving priority to home state first by supplying a lion’s share of the coal mined to Telangana’s thermal power stations.The officials stated that Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) West Bengal, NTECL Durgapur, NSPCL–Jhajjar (Aravali) and NTECL Tamil Nadu have sought about 5.2 million tonnes of coal supply over the next six months. Several other thermal power companies have also requested coal supplies from Singareni.The company has been supplying coal to thermal power stations in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu for decades and helping them meet their energy requirements. In the wake of El Nino conditions, the company is giving priority to local thermal stations.Of the 40,51,312 tonnes of coal supplied to power utilities across the country by Singareni in August, as much as 36,25,937 tonnes was transported to power utilities located in Telangana. The TG-Genco was getting about 50% of the coal dispatches from Singareni, the SCCL officials said.On Monday (September 7) the Telangana recorded a peak load of 18,227 megawatt, a notch below the all-time high of 18,228 MW clocked on March 13 this year and energy consumption this month over 300 million units every day in the first seven days.
