The action-adventure release captures the tone of the original work perfectly and puts players in a series of ridiculous cars, in what is a game that prioritizes having fun above everything else. The only unfortunate reality is that the game has been left in the proverbial doldrums of the past for a while now, stuck on the PlayStation 2/Xbox generation that it released for originally. Emulation was always an option, but setting that up in the first place is a bridge too far for many who simply want to sit down and play. Now, a new way to return to those exciting times has emerged, but there's a major drawback that will likely prove too much of a hurdle for players to get involved. Over on Twitter/X, the user Dwayne shared a post confirming that they had got the game running on browser, with the assistance of AI tools like GPT-6. "Simpsons Hit and Run reversed engineered from the PS2 game and then rebuilt for web using three.js. This was all done by the amazing GPT-6 Astra model on xhigh reasoning (used a lot of my usage to do this). Best part is it's open source," the post reads. The interesting thing about the project is that the PC source code for the original game is already online, so it's difficult to understand why the AI was needed to pull the game apart in the first place, before rebuilding it for browsers. The idea of playing The Simpsons: Hit & Run on Chrome or a similar browser is a very cool one, but the execution here does leave a lot to be desired. From a visual perspective, the game looks fine, but there are subtle differences that have meant the game loses the iconic charm that The Simpsons worked for years to build and refine. For now, if you do feel like playing the game again (and that would be totally understandable), you're best getting hold of an original copy or playing via emulation using the original code.
