Sign in to your TheGamer account Silent Hill: Townfall didn’t launch to quite as much fanfare as the two other games that make up this new era for the series. The difficulty level attached to certain parts of the game played into that. Konami has quickly addressed those concerns, nerfing some of the more unpopular parts of Townfall’s gameplay, but in doing so, the studio has invited those who didn’t have a problem with the latest Silent Hill’s more challenging elements to complain instead. The Weight Gets Nerfed Townfall’s 1.4.0 patch addresses several things about the game that were causing players to become frustrated, and in some cases give up entirely. The biggest one, quite literally, is an enemy called The Weight. Players were annoyed by how hard it was to get past The Weight due to the fact that the enemy cannot be killed, and it takes you out with a single swipe if it spots you. Now, when playing in Story or Normal difficulty, The Weight’s attacks will deal heavy damage rather than insta-kill. The enemy still can’t be killed, but its AI has been improved so that it no longer lurks by the objective or searches the same place over and over. As well as nerfing The Weight, Townfall’s 1.4.0 patch also reduces how much other enemies hit back after a successful melee attack, and made its tricky final puzzle easier to solve. There’s now a manual you can find that you can have open while you complete the puzzle which, without spoiling anything for those who haven’t made it that far, makes finishing that final part of Townfall significantly easier. Not Everyone Wanted Townfall To Be Easier Reactions to these changes are a mixed bag. Some of those who were frustrated by waiting for The Weight are actively thanking Konami, potentially some who had thrown in the towel and will now return thanks to these tweaks. Others, however, have questioned just how much Konami has turned down Townfall’s difficulty levels. “Post patch the enemies not grappling while you’re blocking sounds like you guys are giving up on the vision of the game's combat,” one reply to Konami’s patch notes reads. It is worth noting that the melee combat changes they’re referencing seem to apply to all difficulty levels. That means even those who aren’t finding Townfall too challenging no longer have an option to crank the heat up to Nightmare and keep things the way they were. The Weight’s grab will still kill you instantly when playing on Nightmare. It’s a case of not being able to please everybody all of the time, something that was always going to happen when Konami committed to making these changes. That said, it could have left Nightmare difficulty as it was for those who embrace the challenge. The one element of the game that should now please everyone is the final puzzle, since using the manual that makes it far easier to solve is entirely optional.
