Considering the original game came out 22 years ago, and the fact that this is a remaster, not a remake, those are some ungodly minimum system requirements. For comparison, the "improved graphics" that Aspyr boasts about make this game more demanding than Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and Crimson Desert. Even Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, which came under fire for how demanding its minimum specs were as a family-friendly Lego game, has lower system requirements. If the Aspyr logo wasn't already raising red flags, this oughta do it. Why exactly you need an RTX 4060 or 3060 Ti minimum, and 16GB of RAM, for a Shrek game is beyond me - the graphics aren't remotely enough of a jump from the original to justify it. One theory making the rounds right now to explain the system requirements is that Aspyr has vibecoded the remaster. If you've ever played a vibecoded mod or decomp, you'll understand why. AI-generated code often leads to buggy games and a huge tax on performance, which can be cushioned with a good enough rig. That may explain the hefty system requirements. However, it's worth noting that Aspyr hasn't disclosed AI use on the Steam store page. That doesn't entirely rule it out, of course. Aspyr could have used AI and then tried to skirt the disclaimer to avoid controversy, which wouldn't be too surprising given the company's history of AI use. But right now, there's no proof beyond the system specs, which could equally point to a wildly unoptimized rush job. We've reached out to Aspyr for comment.
