For Her Latest Lulu and Georgia Collection, Sarah Sherman Samuel Experiments With SurrealismTwisted vases, loopy light fixtures, and ruffled mirrors all take on a lifelike qualityCourtesy of Lulu and GeorgiaThe benefit of being both a product designer and an interior designer is that you can produce exactly the kinds of pieces you feel a project is missing. For Sarah Sherman Samuel, a massive 66-inch chandelier, a tiger rug, and a perfectly boxy accent chair made their way from her vision board into her latest collection for Lulu and Georgia. This time around, Sherman got experimental with surrealist forms and silhouettes that she describes as “like something from Beauty and the Beast that would spring to life behind your back.”The line represents an evolution of her core Lulu and Georgia offerings, demonstrating where she is now compared to a decade ago when she debuted her first area rugs for the brand. New materials, more experimental forms, and hand-illustrated florals show Sherman continuing to play up the tension between opposites—old and new, soft and light, next to austere metal.Courtesy of Lulu and GeorgiaCourtesy of Lulu and GeorgiaSherman’s particular love for metallic finishes is apparent in the wiggling iron, chrome, and faux verdigris finishes that accent everything from floor lamps to mirrors and dining chairs—though she aims to make everything feel less heavy and serious via ruffles on the chrome lamp shades and loops built into the verdigris silhouettes.Courtesy of Lulu and GeorgiaCourtesy of Lulu and GeorgiaHer natural surroundings in Michigan are another perpetual muse for her collections. “As a designer, you’re always training your eye, but it’s my personality to be noticing things outside, and taking it, and distilling it down in different ways.” Even the manufactured finishes have roots in nature, like her faux-verdigris metalwork. The mint-green patina typically caused by metal oxidation is now visible on a series of loopy lighting that feels especially animated. Sherman became enamored with the finish, but wanted it to be readily available, instead of waiting decades for the chemical reactions to take their toll.Courtesy of Lulu and GeorgiaSome of her favorite pieces from the line have already materialized in her home. Alongside the Calliope linear chandelier, the Ala rug now lies in her living room, and the Tiikeri in her bedroom—floral prints and irregular stripes all come to life, from the sketchbook to reality.Sherman’s newest collection for Lulu and Georgia is available online now.
