Shogun Meets Baldur's Gate 3 In New Sengoku-Era Japan RPG

Baldur's Gate 3 remains one of the greatest, if not the greatest, RPGs ever made, and, as such, it is no surprise that numerous other titles are aiming to replicate its success. Of course, it wasn't the first CRPG ever made, but it helped popularize the genre substantially and brought vast swathes of attention to upcoming projects within it. Fortunately, it means that anyone looking for an experience akin to BG3 has plenty to turn to, especially as one wonders what is next for the legendary RPG. One of the many games like Baldur's Gate 3 that are releasing in the near future or have already come out is a brand-new, Shogun-esque, RPG set in feudal Japan. It aims to capture both the gameplay and RPG elements of BG3, with the writing, tension, and setting of the aforementioned critically acclaimed series and the legendary novel Shogun, to offer a potentially phenomenal experience. The best part is that this game is available to play right now, giving fans a taste of what a Japanese-themed Baldur's Gate 3 RPG looks like. With the future of Baldur's Gate remaining somewhat unclear and void of Larian's involvement, fans are understandably turning to other projects. Among these is the aforementioned Shogun-esque CRPG that actually comes from a long-running series that has garnered critical acclaim, especially for its focus on amazing writing and historical accuracy. Fans of the series have been understandably excited about it for a while, but newcomers and those coming out of their 100th playthrough of BG3 should absolutely pay attention. Expeditions: Samurai comes from developer Campfire Cabal and publisher THQ Nordic and is the fourth game in the Expeditions series. Starting with Conquistador back in 2013, the Expeditions games have offered richly detailed, somewhat historically accurate CRPG experiences with great gameplay and compelling characters. The best-known entry in the series is Samurai's predecessor, Rome, which garnered critical acclaim and became a must-play CRPG. After the series' creator, Logic Artists, shut down after Rome's release, THQ Nordic formed Campfire Cabal out of a few remaining developers from that studio to keep the Expeditions alive. Expeditions: Samurai is currently in Early Access on Steam, where a vertical slice of the game is available. Those who purchase the game this early will get access to the fundamentals, including combat, world traversal, stealth, and more, alongside seven hours of quests (according to the game's Steam store page). More will be added over the course of the Early Access period, including the rest of the main quest, which is expected to end in Q1 2027. Currently, the game has mixed reviews, with some criticizing the lack of content and writing. However, BG3 experienced a similar trajectory, and it flourished through the Early Access process; so hopefully Expeditions: Samurai will too. It is great to see another RPG set in feudal Japan, something that is surprisingly rare despite the likes of Shogun proving just how captivating an era it can be. Expeditions: Samurai also offers another historically accurate gaming experience, which is also disappointingly rare. So, hopefully this Baldur's Gate 3 meets Shogun CRPG can deliver on the experience fans are so desperately hoping for.
