Shocking moment Walmart shopper, 77, ‘beaten to death over cart dispute with worker’ as wife reveals haunting last words

A WALMART shopper was beaten to death after a dispute over a shopping cart with a teenage employee, his widow has said. The shocking attack was captured on store surveillance footage at a Walmart in Norfolk, Virginia. The grieving widow has now told WTKR News how they had been shopping after going to church when a 17-year-old female employee raced down an aisle with a cart, almost hitting Josephine. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! “He said, ‘You almost hit my wife with your heavy cart, and you did not even say excuse me or apologize to her,’” Josephine recalled. The pair allegedly argued about the incident before the unidentified Walmart worker threw a can towards Bert and Josephine and walked away. Despite being shaken by the incident, the couple of 42 years continued their shopping and that’s when Travis White and Erika Mitchell, the parents of the teenage worker, allegedly tracked them down and attacked Bert. Horrifying surveillance footage obtained by the news outlet shows the elderly shopper being shoved, grabbed, and punched until he is pushed onto the ground and kicked. “They crowded my husband, one of the adults hit him in the face. He fell down on the floor. I was terrified. I don’t know what’s going on,” Josephine said. “While he’s on the floor, they’re still kicking him and I told them stop, my husband has heart problems. She said Bert could still speak and simply said to her, “Help me get up” which she refused to do due to the extent of his injuries, and he quickly lost consciousness. He was rushed to hospital but died of blunt head trauma the following day and his death was ruled a homicide. Norfolk police arrested White, 44, and Mitchell, 42, just days after the attack, and they were charged with malicious wounding by mob, aggravated malicious wounding, and conspiracy to commit a felony. Their attorney has disputed the charges against them, claiming that they were acting in defense of their child and that the alleged assault was not premeditated, as prosecutors claim. “They did not go there, intending for any of this to happen. It was an emotional situation. Their daughter called them. She was distraught,” he told WTKR. “They went, as any parent would do, to try to make sure that their daughter was safe and then the situation kind of erupted. It was spontaneous almost. “We think that the evidence establishes at best an assault because they punched the gentleman, there is some evidence my client may have kicked him, but that’s simple assault, that’s a misdemeanor. “There is nothing that goes further than that, that indicates that there was any chance or likelihood or probability that this man would die as a result of this.” The pair are currently being held without bond in Norfolk jail. The teenager was also charged with assault and battery, aggravated malicious wounding, and conspiracy to commit a felony. She is being held at Norfolk Juvenile Detention Center. Walmart confirmed she is no longer an employee and that the company will continue to work with police in the matter. Bert is survived by his wife and their son Jobert Atienza. Comment now
