Shocking moment SNAKE is spotted in UK supermarket bread aisle – sparking warning from experts

A SNAKE had to be rescued from a supermarket after being discovered in a bread aisle. It is unclear whether the snake was abandoned there or had escaped, but an animal education organisation has highlighted a growing trend. The snake was found in the bread aisle and has now been taken in by Pet Encounter Pet Encounter in Workington, Cumbria, was alerted to the situation and took the baby corn snake after it was found in a branch of Heron Foods last month. The snake, now nicknamed Crumbs, was taken to a local veterinary practice before being handed over to them. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! Ben Nicholson, from Pet Encounter, spoke to the BBC about the incident and said the cost of living may be increasing the number of abandoned pets. So far this year, the group has rescued 21 snakes compared to a total of 14 in 2025. Nicholson said: “There’s the equipment, heat mats, heat bulbs; they all have a cost and we’re in a cost of living crisis. “People are looking to cut down on their energy use, and these animals can be a significant factor.” The expert also explained the organisation is now having to shift its focus slightly following an increase in abandoned pets. He added that many people simply do not understand the unique needs of some exotic animals before purchasing them. We find a lot of them coming through crazes. “With Harry Potter season about to launch again, we’re expecting an influx of owls, so we’re preparing aviaries for that.” Comment now
