Bystanders on the beach rushed to help her before emergency services were called. She was airlifted to a hospital in Cagliari and put in intensive care in serious condition. The victim’s state is understood to have improved in the days following the crash. Most read in The Sun She has since been moved out of the intensive care unit, according to local media. The alleged driver of the boat, a 28-year-old Algerian man, has been arrested on suspicion of facilitating illegal immigration and causing extremely serious bodily injuries. A boy, 16, who was swimming with the girl at the time of the horror said he managed to dodge the vessel at the last second. He told local media: “I was with her, I moved out of the way and saved myself. “After the impact, they stopped, looked at us and ran away.” He also claimed the men on the boat definitely knew their vessel had just struck the girl. He said: “It’s not true that they didn’t realise what had happened.” The boat – a fibreglass vessel powered by an 85-horsepower outboard motor – appeared to continue towards Tuerredda Beach following the smash. Those on board allegedly disembarked the vessel after it reached the coast and tried to get away on foot.
