Despite the Swiss woman claiming to have alerted the crew about the pony, no ferry personnel intervened even when witnessing the poor animal squashed in the back. The video has caused outrage online with one animal activist, Enrico Rizzi calling for the driver to be investigated for alleged animal cruelty. He said: “How is it possible that nobody stopped that vehicle before it was loaded onto the ferry? “Is it possible that no employee of the ferry company Medmar Navi Spa saw a pony crammed inside a small car? “Is it possible that nobody thought it necessary to call the Carabinieri [police]? “And, if staff really were already aware of the animal’s presence, why was the journey allowed to go ahead anyway, given that we are dealing with a crime?” Most read in The Sun Rizzi has reported the incident to the local police in Pozzuoli. He said only a fool could behave in such an inhumane way towards an animal. A local MP, Francesco Emilio Borrelli, has called for the animal’s owner to be identified and for the pony to be taken away from them “to protect its well-being”. Following the shocking discovery, the ferry provider, Medmar Navi, has condemned the incident calling it an “extremely serious and shameful incident.” They say it is entirely incompatible with their principles, values, and rules. The company has launched an internal investigation to determine if there was any liability on the part of their staff. According to the company, initial investigations have already revealed a series of serious operational anomalies, Ansa it reports. It is understood the Citroen may have boarded the ferry without a ticket. Medmar Navi said: “No tolerance will be shown to anyone who violates the rules or fails to carry out required checks.” The company say the incident reflects on the driver’s behaviour and not company policies, which are based on compliance with regulations, safety, and animal welfare.
