Ship worker dies after being struck by metal beam

A man has died aboard a Liberian vessel in north Queensland. Emergency crews responded to reports the man was critically injured in an industrial incident at the Mackay Harbour about 7:30pm yesterday.The man was on board the ship when he was struck by a "large metal beam", a spokesperson from Queensland Ambulance Service said. A Queensland police spokesperson said the man died at the scene.In a statement on Thursday, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said it was investigating the incident on the M/V Bruce and extended its "deepest sympathies to the seafarers' families, friends and colleagues".A report is being prepared for the coroner.North Queensland Bulk Ports, which manages the Port of Mackay, has been contacted for comment.
