Sharon Horgan’s ‘Youth’ Renewed For Season 2 At HBO

Sharon Horgan is returning as literary agent Alex after HBO renewed Youth for a second season. The news comes less than 24 hours after the season one finale. Youth follows a 50-year-old divorcee’s search for sex and love whilst juggling caring for her ailing parents and parenting her should-be grown up son. Horgan stars as Alex in the series, which she created and wrote. [SPOILER ALERT] The eight-part season was left open ended after Alex ends it with Patrick, played by Rupert Friend after discovering a list of pros and cons, with the inability to have children as in the latter column. However, after a one-night stand with her nemesis Malcolm, played by Douglas Hodge, she wakes up to find that her boss Sam, played by Sharlene Whyte, has signed Malcolm. All of this while dealing with a UTI and trying to resolve things with her child Ruari, played by Aran Murphy. Robbie Gee also stars as Frank, Sam’s husband. Youth is produced by Horgan’s Merman and she exec produces alongside Faye Dorn, Jim Kleverweis, and Dawn Shadforth, who also directs. Watch on Deadline Youth comes seven years after Horgan’s last HBO show, Divorce, ended after three seasons. Catastrophe co-creator Horgan is also behind Apple black comedy Bad Sisters, Starz’s Courteney Cox-fronted Shining Vale and BBC comedy Motherland. “I’m so happy to get another opportunity to live out my emotional and biological crises on HBO. I can’t think of a better platform to air my UTI problems on. The response to Youth has been beyond what I could have hoped for. I’m so grateful for the response and the chance to work with this incredible cast and creative team once more,” Horgan said. Amy Gravitt, EVP, HBO Programming, Head of HBO & HBO Max Comedy Series, added, “In a way that only she can, Sharon has created a show that makes us howl with laughter and with tears – often in the same moment. Each performance in Youth is more delightful than the next. Along with our partners at Merman, we are so thrilled to have this brilliant ensemble back for another season.”
