Shapiro unveils final marker in 9/11 trail at Flight 93 memorial

Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) announced that Shanksville, Pennsylvania, would unveil the final marker on the 9/11 National Memorial Trail to honor the heroes of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.The marker will be the final sign placed in Pennsylvania to complete the over 1,500-mile trail that was created to commemorate the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives when al Qaeda attacked the United States 25 years ago. The memorial trail connects New York City, Shanksville, and the Pentagon — the three sites where the terrorist-hijacked planes crashed — while stopping at other historically significant markers along the way. Recommended Stories “Following this ceremony, we will unveil the final marker to complete that trail,” Shapiro said. “Along the trail, you’ll pass through our towns and our cities. You’ll go over bridges and across rivers. You’ll wind your way through the countryside, and you’ll pass fields that looked like this one did on the morning of September 11, 2001, as the sun began to rise.” All 40 passengers and crew on board United Airlines Flight 93 died when the plane crashed into the Shanksville, Pennsylvania field on Sept. 11, 2001. The flight, which was initially bound for San Francisco after taking off from the Newark Liberty International Airport, was hijacked by four terrorists who sought to divert the plane to Washington, D.C.The passengers and crew aboard the flight fought back against the terrorists and successfully thwarted the final attack, as the plane crashed in rural southwest Pennsylvania.The final marker in the 55-stop memorial trail will honor the crew and passengers who sacrificed themselves to fight back against the terrorists.TRUMP HONORS THE FALLEN OF THE 9/11 TERRORIST ATTACKS DURING PENTAGON SPEECH“For those who weren’t blessed to know them, we will see their heroism in other ways, with every blade of grass, with every person we meet, with every ray of sun that peeks through the clouds, we will be reminded of this place, the bravery that consecrated this hallowed ground,” Shapiro said.Former President Joe Biden formally signed legislation designating the route as a federally recognized memorial trail in October 2021.
