Shane Lowry one of us at PGA Championship, tops tee shot into water

Following the opening 18 holes at the 108th PGA Championship, there were seven players tied for the lead. Remarkably, that was the most after the first round of a major in over 60 years. But there were several stars within a couple shots of the lead, including fan-favorite Shane Lowry.Lowry shot a 2-under 68 on Thursday, leaving him one shot behind Scottie Scheffler and others for the lead. But the Irishman's chances at capturing a second major title fell apart on Friday. He began his day on the back nine and bogeyed the par-4 10th. That was a sign of things to come as Aronimink Golf Club has played more like a U.S. Open than a PGA Championship.Lowry dropped another shot on 14, setting the stage for what happened on the par-3 17th. It was one of those shots that every Sunday golfer can relate to, having hit that exact type shot. But fans are not accustomed to seeing professional golfers mishit that badly.Nevertheless, Lowry did, ultimately doubling the hole.Things did not get any better on the front nine (his back nine). The 2019 Open Championship winner bogeyed No. 4, No. 7, and No. 8 to fall to 5-over for the tournament. He saved face, birdieing his final hole. But the damage was done and Shane Lowry entered the clubhouse at the 108th PGA Championship at 4-over.The cut is currently +3, but that may change. After what was such a promising start, the course just outside of Philadelphia has shown its teeth and made players like Lowry look silly.Following the opening 18 holes at the 108th PGA Championship, there were seven players tied for the lead.
