'Severance' Season 3's Official Filming Announcement Is the Best News for Even the Most Impatient Fans

There's never a shortage of television options, but streamers have run into the problem of not being able to release their most popular shows quickly enough. Netflix's Stranger Things had a roughly three-year gap between Seasons 4 and 5, which led to some fan discontent once the show finally returned. For HBO's Euphoria, a staggering four years passed between its second and third seasons. One of Apple TV's biggest sci-fi hits has also faced a long hiatus, but now has some exciting news for fans. We Finally Have an Update About 'Severance' Season 3 Severance truly left fans hanging between Seasons 1 and 2, with a nearly three-year break in between. From 2022 to 2025, the only way to tap back into the Lumon-centered universe was to binge-watch Season 1 all over again. When Season 2 finally dropped, it offered a propulsive, twisty, and deliciously dark continuation of the story, but after the excitement of the finale faded, fans were left wondering when this addictive show would return with new episodes. The last update on Season 3 came in May, when star Adam Scott said, "We're always trying to shorten the amount of time between seasons, but it's more important for it to be great than for it to be fast. We're definitely planning on getting it out much sooner than the last round, which was three years, which was too long." Fans would have to agree, of course, and now creator Dan Erickson and director/EP Ben Stiller have released a thrilling update. Earlier this week, Erickson and Stiller made the same post on Instagram and X, featuring a red-tinged, blurry image of Mark (Scott) and Helly (Britt Lower) running through the hallways of Lumon's severed floor, a reference to the last shot of the Season 2 finale. The best part of their post, however, is the caption attached to it: "To return to work is to return home — Kier Eagan." With the update that Severance has officially begun filming Season 3, there is a chance fans will get new episodes much sooner than last time. 'Severance' Will Only Benefit From a Shorter Turnaround Time Between Seasons Some shows are crushing it by putting out a season a year. Most recently, The Bear and Slow Horses have served as examples of shows with reliable release schedules without a dip in quality. If Severance matches that pace from now on, it could benefit from the same consistency in storytelling. Without long hiatuses, fans can remember more about what's happening in specific storylines and where they left off with their favorite characters. It's much easier to jump back into a show if you don't have trouble recalling prior episodes. There will likely always be buzz about a show as popular and innovative as Severance, but it can be difficult to get viewers to return to a series that has been off the air for too long. Apple TV did embrace some creative marketing techniques before the release of Severance's second season, including a guerrilla in-person stunt with the actors working in New York City's Grand Central Station as well as fun promotional boxes with Lumon-branded gear. While these types of techniques help the show get more hype before a new season drops, it's likely the streamer wouldn't need to do as much promotion if Severance released new episodes more quickly. While Erickson and Stiller's announcement is obviously exciting news, viewers should remain cautiously optimistic. Season 3's production timeframe may not last as long as Season 2 did, given the external delays the show faced, but there's also post-production work to be completed on a show as visually complex as this one, so, in all likelihood, Season 3 won't actually drop until 2027.
