Seven unanswered Patrick Clancy questions from Lindsay’s mystery ‘voice’ to divorce as he reveals why he forgave her

PATRICK Clancy has spoken at length about the night his three children were killed by their mother and his battle to rebuild his shattered life in the years since. But despite opening up in detail about the tragedy his ex Lindsay’s battle with mental health, some of the most difficult questions surrounding the tragedy remain unanswered. Patrick discussed finding Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan in the basement of their Duxbury, Massachusetts, home, his suicidal thoughts in the aftermath and his marriage to new wife Dr. Rachel Danis, who later joined him in the interview. He also revealed why he stands by his decision to forgive Lindsay just days after she strangled their children in January 2023. “I believe that it was her mental illness that caused that,” Patrick told 60 Minutes, adding that without forgiveness, “I would be eaten up inside forever.” Asked whether Lindsay had ever asked him to forgive her, Patrick replied simply: “No. But I gave it to her.” Patrick has remained steadfast in his belief that his ex-wife was not criminally responsible, even after sitting through weeks of evidence and competing expert testimony about Lindsay’s state of mind at the time of the killings. He also opened up about rebuilding his life, revealing that he and Rachel are now planning to start a family after marrying in April. But despite Patrick’s 60 Minutes interview, his previous conversations with The New Yorker for a 2024 article, and hours of testimony at Lindsay’s trial, major questions about the case remain unanswered. One of the biggest mysteries surrounds Lindsay’s claim that she heard a male voice commanding her to kill the children. Patrick did not initially contact his wife after the killings, but a couple of days before her February 7, 2023 arraignment, Lindsay left him a voicemail from a psychologist’s cellphone telling him she loved him. She called again the following day and Patrick answered, with Lindsay telling him she had heard a voice commanding her to kill the children and then herself because it was her “last chance.” “She did not sound like my wife,” Patrick later told The New Yorker. The alleged voice became a major issue at trial, but despite Patrick’s belief that mental illness caused the tragedy, he has never clearly explained whether he personally believes Lindsay heard it or what he thinks it represented. Ross Douthat asked Patrick perhaps the most fundamental question of all during Sunday’s 60 Minutes interview: “Did you ask Lindsay why she did it?” “I asked her if she remembered it,” Patrick replied, explaining that Lindsay described her memory of the killings as being “like a dream.” But the answer addressed whether Lindsay remembers killing the children rather than why she did it, leaving unclear whether she has ever actually given Patrick a full explanation. WHAT ARE HIS THOUGHTS ON THE TRIAL? Patrick gave his extensive interview to The New Yorker, long before jurors heard weeks of evidence about Lindsay’s actions, medical treatment and mental state. At trial, competing experts offered dramatically different conclusions about whether Lindsay was psychotic or understood what she was doing when she killed the children. Patrick nevertheless emerged still adamant that mental illness was responsible, leaving unanswered whether anything he learned in court surprised him, troubled him or changed his understanding of Lindsay’s actions that night. WHAT DID HE THINK OF THE MISTRIAL? The blockbuster case ended without a verdict after seven days of deliberations, and jurors sending multiple notes indicating they were hopelessly deadlocked. Lindsay’s attorney Kevin Reddington said the final split was 11 to one in favor of finding her not criminally responsible, with a single juror refusing to agree. Patrick has not publicly revealed how he felt when the mistrial was declared, or what outcome he now hopes for in the criminal case. WHAT DOES HE THINK OF THE HOLDOUT JUROR? The lone holdout has since identified himself as Michael Desronvil and publicly explained why he refused to find Lindsay not criminally responsible. In a statement released through his representatives, Desronvil insisted he “didn’t have any doubts” about the prosecution’s case and pushed back against fellow jurors who claimed he had acknowledged having reasonable doubt during deliberations. “Based on all the physical evidence, key witnesses, and what the prosecution presented, I thought it was enough proof that she knew exactly what she was doing and planned,” he said. Desronvil has since retained attorney Edward Andrew Paltzik, who said his client had been moved to an undisclosed location in rural northern New England amid concerns for his safety and would not be giving interviews for the time being. Patrick has not publicly responded to Desronvil’s reasoning or revealed what he thinks about the man whose refusal to change his vote prevented the jury from reaching a unanimous verdict. WHAT DOES HE THINK OF KEVIN REDDINGTON? Patrick’s belief that mental illness caused the killings broadly aligns with the case Reddington spent weeks making on Lindsay’s behalf, but he has said little publicly about the veteran defense attorney or his handling of the blockbuster trial. Reddington became something of a celebrity during the proceedings, regularly holding court with reporters outside the courthouse and later appearing on national television to discuss the case. He has also publicly defended Patrick against conspiracy theories surrounding the killings, urging people to stop the “speculation and horrific conspiracy allegations” against him. But Patrick has never publicly revealed what he thinks of Reddington, what relationship the two men have or how he viewed the attorney’s aggressive defense of his ex-wife. Patrick has, however, made clear that he does not want to endure another trial, with his legal team saying after the mistrial that the prospect of reliving the tragedy was “extraordinarily painful.” WHEN DID THEY LAST SPEAK AND HOW DID THEIR MARRIAGE END? Patrick and Lindsay resumed contact after around six months without speaking following a brief conversation before her arraignment. At the suggestion of her father, Patrick called Lindsay on her birthday in August 2023 and later told The New Yorker that subsequent conversations allowed them to “fill in the gaps.” But what the former couple talked about remains largely private, including when they last spoke and whether they are still in contact. Little is also known about how their marriage ended. Patrick declined to discuss its status with The New Yorker at the time, saying he wanted to respect Lindsay’s privacy. His mother Sue acknowledged that her son faced a future without Lindsay, saying: “He has to come to terms with the fact that she’s no longer part of anything. She’s gonna go her way, and he’s gonna go his.” The couple later divorced, but Patrick has not revealed when the decision was made, who initiated proceedings or how they handled the end of their marriage. Patrick has since married fertility specialist Rachel, with the couple revealing Sunday that they plan to start a family. It remains unclear whether Patrick personally told Lindsay about Rachel or what she knows about their plans to have children. Comment now
