Seven, including six nursing students arrested, in drug case in Puducherry

The police have arrested seven persons, including six students who are pursuing nursing course at a private medical college here, under several sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in connection with the use and sale of ganja in Puducherry.The police identified the accused as Sumanraja, Purushothaman, Ajay, Sheik Asif, Sudharshan, all residents of neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu and Abdhul Nabhil, a resident of Thilaspet in Puducherry.The other accused arrested in the case, Hashik Ali, a resident of Kattumannar Koil in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, had procured and handed over the cannabis to the students for use and sale inside the campus.Superintendent of Police, South, Chintha Kothanda Ram, in a release said the students were staying in an apartment at Kirumampakkam near here on Cuddalore Road. Law enforcers received information through Police Control Room toll free number 112 that inmates of an apartment in Iswariya Garden were using drugs, he said.A search conducted by the Kirumampakkam police led to the arrest of students at the apartment smoking ganja. The team seized around 175 grams of ganja, one glass of bong, mini bong and butane torch lighter from the students. Further investigation was on to identify the source of supply of the seized ganja and other persons involved in the network, he said.“The arrested students were not just procuring narcotic substances for own use, but also for sale to other students. We request the college managements and parents to remain vigilant. Legal action will be initiated against all those violating law. In the particular case, the college administration has been intimated to take disciplinary action against those students who were found involved in the offence,” the SP said.Seeking cooperation of all sections of the society in eradicating the drug menace, the SP said the public could share information on the toll free numbers 112/1933 on use of drugs near the places of residents.
