Serbia’s Grief Over Mladic’s Death is Neither Honourable Nor Dignified

Official tributes to the convicted war criminal, openly glorifying his deeds, are another reminder that Serbia has yet to come to terms with its bloody past. On August 27, I received a push notification on my phone saying that Ratko Mladic had died. In Serbia, where denial of war crimes has become part of official policy, and where everyone is now waiting for elections to be announced, I knew we would likely miss this opportunity to deal with the past in a dignified and responsible manner.
