The Resident Evil franchise makes for one of the most popular video game franchises of all time. Starting all the way back on March 22, 1996, with the first game, the Resident Evil franchise has defined the horror genre in the medium for generations. Its immense popularity has led to the universe transcending its original medium and being explored through movies, TV shows, comics, manga, and more. While the franchise continues strong with new games, like 2026's Resident Evil Requiem, it has cemented itself as a true multimedia phenomenon. To that end, there have been several Resident Evil movies over the years. Famously, the concept and its characters gave way to a long-running live-action movie franchise mainly directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich as the original character Alice. 2021's Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City then tried to reboot it by being closer to the games, with Weapons director Zach Cregger soon rebooting the franchise once more around an original character with the upcoming Resident Evil, which releases in theaters on September 18, 2026. Ahead of its release, six Resident Evil movies, both live-action and animated, will come to streaming in September. Every Resident Evil Movie Hitting Streaming & Where To Watch The six Resident Evil movies in question are divided between releases in Jovovich's live-action franchise and animated films that are more closely tied to the characters and lore of the games. Three of the live-action Resident Evil movies are going to be released on Netflix on Tuesday, September 1, right at the start of the month. Those include 2007's Resident Evil: Extinction, which saw Alice find survivors in Las Vegas, 2010's Resident Evil: Afterlife, which had Alice and others in a Los Angeles prison with undead on all sides, and 2012's Resident Evil: Retribution, which focuses on Alice escaping an Umbrella Corporation base. Kennedy crosses paths with Ada Wong in Europe as he is trying to stop Bio-Organic Weapons from being spread all over the world, 2017's Resident Evil: Vendetta, where Leon works with Chris Redfield and Rebecca Chambers to stop a virus from taking over New York, and 2023's Resident Evil: Death Island, where Leon, Chris, Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Rebecca infiltrate Alcatraz. Resident Evil Also Makes A Theatrical Comeback This Month The timing of this bulk release of Resident Evil movies on Netflix could not be more perfect. With Cregger's Resident Evil reboot movie set to release in theaters on September 18, fans of the franchise and newcomers will have two weeks for a movie marathon to get ready for the franchise's next theatrical release. Different from the live-action films, which featured key game characters sporadically, and the CG-animated films, which put them in main roles, the new Resident Evil movie is not expected to feature any characters from the games, focusing instead on Austin Abrams' Bryan, a medical courier trapped in Raccoon City.
