According to the YouGov Big Survey on Christmas, published in November, up to 14 per cent of Britons started their Christmas shopping in September in a bid to beat the festive rush. Meanwhile, searches for 'Christmas' went up by almost 300 per cent on Selfridges.com during the month of August, compared to July. Fortunately, luxury department store Selfridges has unveiled the 10 must-have Christmas toys that they believe will be among the bestselling gifts for children.This year, 90s nostalgia and Japanese-inspired toys are set to dominate the market, with parents keen to get their hands on Jellycat's rare Leicester Pigeon and a unique colourful slime set packed with 50 pieces for children of all ages to enjoy. Much-loved Sylvanian Families and BRATZ dolls are also set to be standouts, with the nostalgia of old-school Bratz dolls reinvented with Bratzies. The craze for Pokémon has also shown little sign of wavering, with the brand commemorating 30 years by launching a new collection that allows players to accumulate a range of cards from each set. 90s nostalgia and Jellycats are set to be among the bestselling toys this Christmas, according to early predictions by Selfridges Shrek lovers can get their hands on a rare Lego Shrek, Donkey and Puss in Boots playset for £110, while the rise of the Japanese influence is set to see the Chiikawa Keychain hit the Christmas wish list at £25. Meanwhile, Hello Kitty, created by Japanese illustrator Yuko Shimizu, and top of teenage wish-lists in the 1990’s, has launched a collection with STEIFF in celebration of love and optimism. Joe Evans, Selfridges Toy Buyer, said: 'I think we're going to see smiles on families' faces this Christmas, as parents indulge in some of their favourite childhood toys, with 90s classics set for a big comeback. 'We also expect Japanese toys like Pokémon and Hello Kitty to fly off the shelves. And of course, Christmas wouldn't be the same without a new must-have Jellycat plushie for shoppers both young and old to covet!' The Christmas Shop at Selfridges London opened on Monday September 14, with more than 1120 decorations for customers to choose from.This year, the staple British shop have tried to lean into the 90s nostalgia and Japanese influence sweeping social media. The retailers bauble collection are set to include a range of Pokémon characters, Hello Kitty and a nod to 90’s icons including the Spice Girls and Snoopy.It comes as Selfridges' boss has reiterated his call to restore tax-free shopping for international visitors. The high-end department store chain said stronger in-store sales and tighter cost control helped it deliver a sharp improvement in its annual performance.The business posted a pre-tax profit of £13million for the 52 weeks to January 3, 2026, against a £15.9million loss a year earlier.Revenue rose seven per cent to £830.8million, while the firm's operating profit jumped 88 per cent to £79.7million as it benefited from higher margins and increased sales across its stores.The results represent a marked turnaround for Selfridges, which last year reported its fifth consecutive annual pre-tax loss after revenues fell to £775million. The prior reporting period covered 48 weeks, rather than 52.André Maeder, chief executive of Selfridges, said the performance demonstrated the retailer’s 'resilience amid a challenging economic and retail environment'.
