Sen. Moreno went viral for attacking Fauci — and that was his plan

Bernie Moreno embarrassed himself and all Ohioans this week during his profane interactions with Dr. Anthony Fauci. You’d be right if you thought Moreno’s performative macho shtick at the hearing meant that he isn’t all that concerned about real threats to the American public like health crises caused by viruses such as COVID-19 and the measles. Instead of concerning himself with the public health, Moreno seems to be most concerned about trying to go viral online while he works to make President Donald Trump impervious to criticism. For as enraged as Moreno seemed to be at Dr. Fauci, you’d think he forgot that Trump was President during the first year of the COVID pandemic. But Moreno’s performative Fauci-shouting is part of a broader Republican preoccupation with attempting to rewrite history. Whether their politically motivated rewrites involve reframing Trump’s own COVID response or denying the 2020 election that Trump lost or deleting mentions of the failed insurrection that Trump incited on Jan. 6, 2021, Republicans are constantly trying to write a new past for Donald Trump instead of addressing problems Ohioans face now.
