Second UK train derails just 24 hours after Lewes crash as Essex passengers warned ‘do not travel’

A SECOND train has derailed in another major crash just 24 hours after 20 people were injured when a train came off the tracks and rolled over. Emergency services are responding to reports that a Greater Anglia train derailed just outside of Wickford in Essex. A nearby footbridge has been closed as emergency crews work at the scene Credit: Facebook/@lucylamb All trains in the area have been cancelled with commuters plunged into chaos A Greater Anglia spokesperson said: “Due to a problem currently under investigation between Shenfield and Southend Victoria, all lines are blocked. “Train services running to and from these stations will be suspended. “Disruption is expected until further notice. “Please do not travel between Shenfield and Southend Victoria until further notice.” Most read in The Sun It is understood to be the 13.51 service from Wickford to Southend Victoria that came off the tracks. An image shared to social media appears to show a single carriage at the rear of the train off the tracks and at a dead stop. A footbridge across the rail line has been closed as crews work at the chaotic scene. Further images taken by passengers who are reportedly stuck on the stopped train have been shared to social media. A crowd of stunned bystanders can be seen gathered at the edge of the rails with the crashed train next to them. All trains in the area have been cancelled as the emergency services work to deal with the scene. A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “Officers are currently on scene at Wickford railway station in Essex following reports that the rear carriages of a train have derailed in an upright position at 2.12pm today. “We’re responding alongside paramedics and the fire service. There are currently no reported injuries.” A National Rail spokesperson said it was dealing with a derailment incident in Anglia. National Rail added that all lines were blocked between Southend Victoria and Wickford with disruption expected until at least 4.30pm. A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We are dealing with a derailment incident in Anglia, and we are working quickly to understand the situation and to provide assistance where needed. “We will provide further information in due course.” Local councillor Alex Myers said: “I am aware of reports that a train has derailed in Wickford. “The footbridge across the line from Salcott Crescent to Russell Gardens is closed and emergency services are in attendance. “Updates will be provided from the Council, Emergency Services and Greater Anglia as they become available. “My thoughts are with all those onboard and hope there are no serious injuries.” Passengers are asked not to travel between Shenfield and Southend Victoria “until further notice”, Greater Anglia said on its website.
