SEC Media Days are often considered the unofficial start — or, more accurately, preview — of the upcoming college football season. And with last week’s SEC circus now firmly in the rearview mirror, all eyes within the league’s geographical footprint are focused on the start of the 2026 season. As part of that build-up, Athlon Sports took the opportunity to evaluate the entire SEC and break its 16 teams into five tiers based around their postseason potential. On one end of the spectrum, Athlon identified a couple of conference favorites entering 2026 with serious national championship aspirations. And on the other end are a pair of perennial conference cellar dwellers that could require several big breaks to even be competitive this season. Georgia has won back-to-back conference titles and returns 14 starters off last year’s squad, including star quarterback Gunner Stockton. And while there are still some questions to be answered offensively, the Bulldogs’ 2026 defense is chock-full of experienced talent with elite potential this season. On the other side, Texas enters Year 6 under Steve Sarkisian as a national championship favorite — a similar spot to where it stood a year ago. Only, this season’s Longhorns $40 million roster is exponentially improved after Sarkisian dove head-first into the transfer portal this offseason. Not only does Heisman Trophy frontrunner Arch Manning return at QB, but he’s got help courtesy of WRs Cam Coleman and Ryan Wingo, and RBs Raleek Brown and Hollywood Smothers. Athlon Sports: “It’s a close call between Georgia and Texas for the No. 1 spot in the SEC, but a slight edge goes to coach Kirby Smart’s team. The Bulldogs have won all three meetings between these two programs since the Longhorns joined the SEC, including a 35-10 victory in Athens last season.” Teams: Oklahoma Sooners; Texas A&M Aggies; LSU Tigers; Ole Miss Rebels; Alabama Crimson Tide; Tennessee Volunteers This is by far the largest tier with six additional CFP contenders, further highlighting the SEC’s premier depth as a conference with eight total teams Athlon believes are capable of making the Playoffs in 2026. Five of the six SEC teams in this tier rank between 8-15 in Athlon’s preseason ranking — including four teams (Alabama, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Texas A&M) that made the CFP’s 12-team field last season. That said, of that mix, Athlon only expects the Aggies and Sooners will make return trips to the CFP in 2026 behind potential Heisman-hopeful QBs in Marcel Reed and John Mateer, respectively. At the same time, LSU and first-year head coach Lane Kiffin reloaded with 40+ transfer additions, while his former program, Ole Miss, brings back arguably the SEC’s top two returning players in QB Trinidad Chambliss and RB Kewan Lacy. And don’t discount Alabama and Tennessee, both facing serious questions at QB. Athlon Sports: “This tier showcases the depth of the SEC. Six teams outside of Georgia and Texas should be playoff contenders, including four — Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Alabama — that earned a spot in the 12-team field last season.” Tier 3: Wild Card Teams Teams: Florida Gators; South Carolina Gamecocks; Missouri Tigers; Auburn Tigers This tier is full of unproven potential, with SEC teams that could work themselves into the Playoff mix if things tend to fall their way this season. And while that’s still a bit of a stretch, this foursome certainly has the potential to create chaos and even play spoiler for some of the aforementioned SEC contenders in the tiers above. Despite struggles last season, the Gamecocks still have many of the same players that had South Carolina on the precipice of reaching the Playoffs in 2024, including star QB LaNorris Sellers. Both Florida and Auburn will debut former Group of Six head coaches in Jon Sumrall and Alex Golesh, respectively, this season, though both take over rosters with a wealth of SEC-caliber talent. Meanwhile, Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz enters Year 7 in CoMo with an exceptionally talented roster, albeit one with more questions than answers, especially with star RB Ahmad Hardy (gun shot) and new QB Austin Simmons. Athlon Sports: “It wouldn’t be a surprise to see at least one of these teams contend for a playoff spot if things break right this season.” Tier 4: Should Reach Bowl Eligibility Teams: Mississippi State Bulldogs; Vanderbilt Commodores This is where things start to get a little tricky. Athlon appears confident both Mississippi State and Vanderbilt could return to bowl eligibility in 2026 after making it last season, though it won’t come easy. The Commodores are coming off a program-defining 10-win season in 2025, but won’t have the benefit of a seventh season of collegiate eligibility for quarterback Diego Pavia, a Heisman finalist last year. Meanwhile, the five-win Bulldogs only qualified for the Duke’s Mayo Bowl after other bowl-eligible programs opted out for one reason or another. Still, there is reason for hope in Jeff Lebby‘s third season, and his name is Kamario Taylor, the Bulldogs’ talented dual-threat QB. If Taylor and a new-look defense continue to show improvement, Mississippi State could make a bowl the right way in 2026. Tier 5: Needs A Few Breaks For The Postseason Teams: Kentucky Wildcats; Arkansas Razorbacks Last and certainly least — at least in this ranking — Athlon doesn’t have as much faith either of these SEC cellar dwellers will do much to write home about in 2026. Both Arkansas and Kentucky will debut new head coaches in Ryan Silverfield, formerly of Memphis, and former Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein, a first-time head coach himself. Stein has certainly generated a lot of buzz through his first 6-7 months on the job, especially on the recruiting trail, which is a nice change of pace for Big Blue Nation after 13 seasons under former coach Mark Stoops. And while Silverfield hasn’t managed to create the same offseason hype in Fayetteville, a completely overhauled roster coupled with a difficult schedule could spell doom in 2026.
