SC/ST commission receives maximum complaints from Thiruvananthapuram district, says panel chief

2,500 of the 10,000 complaints received by the commission were from Thiruvananthapuram. | Photo Credit: Getty Images The Kerala State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes receives the maximum number of complaints from Thiruvananthapuram district, commission chairperson Sekharan Miniyodan has said.Addressing mediapersons after the Thiruvananthapuram adalat of the commission, its 45th, here on Thursday, Mr. Miniyodan said 2,500 of the 10,000 complaints received by the commission from January 9, 2024, when its term began to March 31, 2026, were from Thiruvananthapuram. This number was very high. This was owing to the district’s peculiarities such as easy access for filing complaints and high population. Complaints were received even from the floating population, he said.The commission, Mr. Miniyodan said, had been successful in “revamping” the administration by creating awareness among them of the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and addressing their indifference and mistakes.As a result, the number of complaints in hand had come down to 500 from 10,000 two years ago.As many as 8,500 complaints were disposed of across the State. The complainants were heard directly by the commission in 2,500 cases.Of the 10,000 complaints taken up by the commission in the two years, 6,000 were pending complaints, going back as far back as 2009.At the Thiruvananthapuram adalat of the commission held on Wednesday and Thursday, 163 complaints were received of which 138 were disposed of. The remaining complaints would be heard and action taken after seeking police reports and perusing other documents. One of the complaints taken up was from 2019.Eighty-nine of the complaints related to police atrocities, 34 related to land revenue, and 13 related to service matters.
