(UAB athletics photo)UAB athleticsBy Creg Stephenson | cstephenson@al.comUAB is back home on Thursday night, hosting East Carolina for its homecoming game. The Blazers face the Pirates at 6:30 p.m. at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, with TV coverage on ESPN. East Carolina leads the all-time series with UAB 9-4, with the last meeting a 63-14 Pirates victory in 2013.UAB (3-3, 1-1 American) is coming off a 38-13 loss at Memphis last Saturday. East Carolina (3-2, 1-0) beat Rice 28-12 the same day. Here’s everything you need to know about Thursday’s game, including a key matchup, storylines and a score prediction.Key matchupUAB QB Ryder Burton vs. East Carolina secondaryThe Blazers are one of two teams in the American with fewer touchdown passes than interceptions thrown this season (winless Charlotte is the other). UAB’s passing operation could stand to be better across the board (protection, route running, etc.), but that starts with Burton, who has topped 150 yards passing just once this season (174 vs. Navy). The Pirates have allowed just one passing touchdown all season, with five interceptions. The Blazers are going to have to throw to win one of these weeks, but it will be especially tough on Thursday night. StorylinesNational spotlight on UAB’s homecoming gameIt’s a rare Thursday night homecoming game in college football, the tradeoff being that UAB-East Carolina will get the national spotlight on ESPN. Not only will the game air live on The Worldwide Leader, but the network’s “SportsCenter on Campus” will broadcast from outside Protective Stadium at 4:30 p.m. Central on Thursday. The other homecoming events, including the parade and tailgating, will also take place in the middle of a workday afternoon in downtown Birmingham. It’s an unusual occurrence, to say the least. American’s top 2 defenses in actionUAB and East Carolina rank 1-2 in the American in total defense, though the Pirates have been a little more consistent across the board. ECU ranks fourth in the league in scoring defense, second in total defense, third in rushing defense and second in passing defense.UAB, meanwhile, ranks just eighth in fewest points allowed, first in fewest yards allowed and passing yards allowed, but 13th (out of 14) in rushing yards allowed. It’s an open question as to whether the Blazers are really that good against the pass or just that bad against the run.PredictionEast Carolina 17, UAB 13The Blazers got a tough draw with two of the more-talented teams in the American back-to-back in a five-day period. That’s likely to catch up with them in the second half of this one.UAB’s offense is still struggling with consistency, particularly in the passing game. Neither team is likely to light up the scoreboard, but give the Pirates a slight edge.Game infoWho: East Carolina (3-2, 1-0) at UAB (3-3, 1-1)Where: Protective Stadium, BirminghamWhen: Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026 — 6:30 p.m. CentralWatch: ESPNOn the call: Matt Barrie, Chase Daniel, Paul Carcaterra (TV); David Crane, Bryant Thomas, Landrum Roberts (UAB radio)Listen: WJOX 94.5 FMCreg Stephenson became college sports managing producer for AL.com in 2026.
