Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, starring Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, has become a cult classic in the years since its release, while Netflix reunited nearly the entire cast for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off in 2023. Earlier this year, the franchise expanded once again with the release of Scott Pilgrim EX, giving fans a brand-new adventure featuring familiar faces and an original story. That latest chapter introduced players to a new threat in the form of Metal Scott, a mysterious villain created specifically for the game. While fans were able to battle the robotic doppelgänger in Scott Pilgrim EX, his origins remained largely unexplored. Now, O'Malley is returning to the franchise that made him a household name to tell that story himself. Oni Press has announced Scott Pilgrim EX: Dawn of Metal Scott #1, a brand-new one-shot comic written and illustrated by O'Malley. Serving as a prequel to Scott Pilgrim EX, the issue marks the creator's first new Scott Pilgrim comic in 16 years and will arrive in comic shops on November 11. In addition to expanding the game's story, the one-shot will also include bonus material offering readers a look behind the scenes at O'Malley's creative process. The 24-page issue features a new 16-page story introducing Metal Scott before the events of the video game. O'Malley is handling both the writing and artwork, including providing the comic's main cover. Alongside the new story, the one-shot will include previously unseen extras that further explore how the project came together. "When I was asked to create a minicomic for Scott Pilgrim EX, I quickly said yes without considering the implications," O'Malley said in a statement. "Only when I started writing and drawing it did I realize this would be the first new Scott Pilgrim comic in 16 years. It's only a trifle, but returning to Scott's Toronto really did feel like coming home." According to Oni Press, the story takes place after Scott and Ramona have settled into life together, with the Seven Evil Exes finally moving on from their unhealthy obsessions. That period of peace is interrupted when Metal Scott emerges as a dangerous new threat, setting the stage for the events players experienced in Scott Pilgrim EX. The publisher describes the issue as both an accessible jumping-on point for new readers and an expansion of the game's narrative for longtime fans. O'Malley first introduced readers to Scott Pilgrim in 2004 with Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, eventually completing the acclaimed series across six graphic novels. Scott Pilgrim EX: Dawn of Metal Scott #1 goes on sale on November 11.
