Heavy rain and rising river levels have disrupted daily life across parts of Uttar Pradesh and Odisha, with waterlogging, overflowing rivers and flood-like conditions forcing authorities to shut schools in several districts.In Uttar Pradesh, the situation is particularly serious in areas along the Ganga, Yamuna, Saryu and Rapti rivers. Roads and residential areas have been waterlogged in several districts, while villages in low-lying areas have been affected by rising water levels. As the rain continues, district administrations have announced school holidays in Prayagraj, Kaushambi, Mirzapur and Bhadohi.Odisha is also dealing with flooding and heavy rainfall, with school closures reported in Jajpur and Bhadrak. In Jajpur, the administration has ordered all schools to remain closed on August 18 amid the prevailing flood situation.The closures differ from district to district, with some orders covering all classes while others apply only to specific age groups. In some areas, teaching and non-teaching staff have also been given separate instructions. The Ganga and Yamuna are rising, although both remain below the danger mark. In Kaushambi, schools from pre-primary to Class 12 have been shut. The order covers council-run, government-aided and recognised schools, including Hindi- and English-medium institutions.Mirzapur has closed schools up to Class 8 after heavy rain caused the Adva Dam to fill to capacity, swelling the Adva River and flooding nearby areas.In Bhadohi, schools from Classes 1 to 12 have been closed, although teaching staff have been asked to report for departmental duties.ODISHA ALSO SEES SCHOOL CLOSURESIn Jajpur, all government, government-aided and private schools have been ordered closed on August 18 amid flooding and heavy rain. The closure covers elementary, secondary and higher secondary institutions.In Bhadrak, 268 schools have been affected amid the flood situation, with educational activities disrupted in affected areas.The weather has also affected communities beyond schools. In Uttar Pradesh, more than 200 homes in Unnao have been surrounded by floodwater, while over five dozen villages in Farrukhabad have been affected.
