SC revises Noida DM order, pauses Rs 5 lakh penalty, upholds student's detention relief

The Supreme Court revised its interim order in the Noida DM case, staying the Rs 5 lakh compensation and strictures against DM Medha Roopam.Gautam Buddha Nagar DM Medha Roopam (Photo: Facebook/Medha Roopam, IAS)The Supreme Court has revised its interim order in the petition filed by Gautam Buddh Nagar District Magistrate (Noida DM) Medha Roopam, clarifying that its stay applies only to the adverse comments made by the Allahabad High Court against the officer and its direction to pay compensation to student Akriti Chaudhary, who was detained under the National Security Act in connection with the Noida workers' protest.The revised order makes it clear that the Allahabad High Court's judgment quashing Chaudhary's detention has not been stayed.The clarification came after the Supreme Court's earlier order, uploaded on Wednesday, said that, "Till the matter is heard on merits, the operation of the impugned judgment, particularly, para Nos. 27 to 33 shall remain stayed." This wording had effectively stayed the operation of the entire High Court judgment.In its subsequently uploaded revised order, the Supreme Court specified that, "till the matter is heard on merits, the operation of paras nos. 27 to 33 of the impugned judgment including award of costs and strictures against the petitioner, shall remain stayed."A bench comprising Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice NK Singh heard the petitions filed by Medha Roopam and the State of Uttar Pradesh against the Allahabad High Court's judgment.Paragraphs 27 to 33 of the High Court's judgment contained the strictures against the Noida DM and directed the payment of Rs 5 lakh as compensation to student Akriti Chaudhary. The compensation was to be recovered from Medha Roopam's salary.With the revised wording, the Supreme Court has stayed the operation of those paragraphs, including the strictures and compensation direction, while leaving intact the High Court's decision to quash Chaudhary's detention.- EndsPublished On: Sep 24, 2026 14:56 IST
