SC extends mediation phase in Rs 1-lakh crore Kalyani family feud till October end

The long-running legal dispute within the influential Kalyani family appears to have entered a significant phase. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court extended the ongoing mediation process until the end of October and directed courts hearing the various cases between family members to defer proceedings while the settlement talks continue.A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, and comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, has scheduled the matter for further hearing on October 26.The court had initiated mediation on July 13 this year, appointing former Supreme Court judge, L Nageswara Rao, as the mediator. Since then, the process has received multiple extensions at the request of the concerned parties.The latest extension, coupled with the continued deferment of the underlying litigations, indicates that the settlement process remains actively underway. KALYANI FAMILY DISPUTE: BRIEF OVERVIEWThe dispute involves siblings Baba Kalyani, Sugandha Hiremath and Gaurishankar Kalyani and their respective families, who have been locked in litigation for almost two decades over claims concerning ancestral family wealth estimated at more than Rs 1 lakh crore, including substantial immovable properties and interests connected with listed Kalyani Group companies.The mediation arose after Sugandha Hiremath challenged the Bombay High Court's May 4 judgment declining mediation between the siblings.
