Say goodbye: Beloved fashion retailer closing final store after 43 years

Established in 1983 by Kathleen Doxer and her husband Orrin, Frugal Fannie’s is ending its 43-year run in the Baystate with a major liquidation sale and an emotional farewell.“This is a very sad time for us and maybe some of you,” Doxer said in a social media announcement. “We wish to thank our loyal customers, who over these long years have shown up, supported us and become our friends. Making you happy was always our greatest pleasure!”At its peak, the company operated four stores in the Greater Boston area, with its final store in Westwood, Mass., closing in the coming months. Going-out-of-business sales kicked off Thursday, Sept. 24. Doxer said the reasons for closing include medical hardships, retirements and the ending of Frugal Fannie’s lease, “with no remaining options.”She thanked vendors, the local police departments, associates and their families for helping support the business in various ways.“We are immensely proud of what we were able to build together. Through good times and difficult ones, we weathered it all making big things happen right here in our little corner of the world,” she said. “It was an epic journey.”According to Frugal Fannie’s updated website, all purchases made after Sept. 24 are final. Purchases made before going-out-of-business sales kicked off will be honored.Gift cards and merchandise credits can also be redeemed through Wednesday, Nov. 11. The company said it will not accept checks, but purchases can be made with major credit cards and cash. Sales will continue until all merchandise and furniture are sold.
