At least 33 people were killed and 39 wounded after Saudi Arabia conducted airstrikes on a town near the Yemeni capital of Sanaa on Saturday, the Saba news agency reported. This is one of the deadliest attacks in Yemen since the Saudis renewed their war against Ansarullah, the coalition that governs most of the impoverished Arab nation and is commonly known as the Houthis, in July. Saudi Arabia's Centre for International Communication said it was “investigating the report”.The renewed fighting has shattered a 2022 truce brokered by the UN. Saudi Arabia has carried out airstrikes across Yemen and backed its local allies to launch offensives against Ansarullah positions. Ansarullah, in turn, have launched missile and drone attacks on Saudi military facilities, airports and oil infrastructure. They have also carried out lightning counteroffensives against Saudi-backed forces on the ground, capturing vast swathes of territory in the process and tightening their control over Bab el Mandeb, a critical maritime chokepoint in the Red Sea. Ansarullah are currently fighting Saudi-backed forces for control of the strategic city of Taiz. The airstrikes on Sunday hit homes in the town of Bani Hushaish and killed mostly women and children, the health ministry in Sanaa said. Anees Alasbahi, a spokesperson for the ministry, told Al-Masirah TV that many people were still buried under the rubble as subsequent strikes targeted emergency workers trying to pull out survivors.Footage broadcast by Al-Masirah TV of the aftermath of the strikes showed staff carrying limp bodies of multiple young children out of ambulances at a local hospital. One little girl's head had been cleaved open. Other children lay on stretchers, bloodied and bandaged as staff tended to them. A wounded man covered in dust was still wearing a first responder's orange vest as he was helped out of an ambulance.Yemenis search through rubble following Saudi airstrikes on a town near Sanaa on 7 November 2026 (Al-Masirah TV)“The strikes keep coming. Just as rescuers arrive, another strike hits. We have even lost some of our own medical responders who have been martyred," Abdul-Aziz al-Dailami, the director of Sehatuna Hospital in Sanaa, told Reuters. "We received a number of wounded people in very critical condition, with injuries to the head, chest and legs as well as fractures.”The ongoing fighting has revived a 12-year war in Yemen that has caused one of the worst humanitarian crises globally and fragmented the Arab world's most impoverished country. The war has killed at least 150,000 people, according to the UN, and caused widespread deaths from hunger and disease outbreaks. The number of people displaced since the latest round of fighting began has climbed to over 200,000, the International Organization for Migration said in October.
