Sassa September grants: Here’s when beneficiaries will be paid

Social grant beneficiaries that still use Sassa gold cards have less than five days to migrate to Postbank's black cards. The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) will pay out the September 2026 social grants next week. The agency administers more than 19 million grant payments, including the Older Persons Pension Grant, Disability Grant, War Veterans Grant, Care Dependency Grant, Foster Child Grant, Child Support Grant, Child Support Grant Top-Up, and Grant-in-Aid. September 2026 payment dates Grant beneficiaries are advised that payments will be made on the following dates: Older Persons Grant – Wednesday, 2 September 2026 Disability Grant – Thursday, 3 September 2026 Children’s grants – Friday, 4 September 2026 Sassa grant amounts: Old Age Grant (60-74 years) and Disability Grant – R2 315 Old Age Grant (75 years and older) – R2 335 War Veterans Grant – R2 315 Care Dependency Grant – R2 315 Child Support Grant – R560 Foster Care Grant – R1 250 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant – R370 Beneficiaries have less than five days to migrate to black cards Social grant beneficiaries who have not yet migrated from Sassa gold cards to Postbank’s black cards have less than five days to complete the process before the 31 August deadline. Postbank has made a final appeal to beneficiaries still using gold cards to migrate before the deadline to avoid disruptions to accessing their grant payments. More than 1.8 million beneficiaries have already successfully migrated to black cards since the process began in 2025. The latest migration process, which started in April 2026, targeted about 420 000 beneficiaries. Postbank said fewer than 80 000 still need to complete the process. KwaZulu-Natal has highest number outstanding The beneficiaries who still need to migrate are predominantly located in KwaZulu-Natal, with about 20 000 still outstanding. This is followed by the Western Cape with 17 000, the Eastern Cape with 15 000 and Gauteng with 14 000 beneficiaries who have yet to complete the migration. Postbank said the 31 August deadline will not be extended. “Our priority as a state-owned bank that is responsible for financial inclusion is to ensure that no single beneficiary experience any interruptions to their grant payments that we know they deeply depend on,” said Postbank Chief Commercial Officer Thami Cele. “We understand that grant payments are an important source of livelihood for many families, and we want to ensure that no one is unnecessarily inconvenienced,” Cele said. What happens after the deadline? Postbank said beneficiaries who miss the deadline will not lose their grant payments. Grant funds will still be paid into the accounts of affected beneficiaries and their accounts will remain active after 31 August. However, beneficiaries who have not migrated will have to complete the migration to a black card before they can access their funds. Postbank said it has introduced additional operational measures at card replacement sites to accommodate an expected increase in beneficiaries during the final days of the migration process. Most card replacement sites will also remain open for a period after the deadline to assist beneficiaries who miss the cut-off. However, Postbank urged beneficiaries to migrate before 31 August to avoid delayed access to their funds. Migration is free Beneficiaries can complete the migration at Postbank sites inside selected retailers, including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar stores. They can dial 120355# from any cellphone to locate a nearby card migration site. The migration is free and beneficiaries only need a valid South African identity document or temporary identity document. Beneficiaries can collect their black cards from any province, regardless of where their Sassa grant was approved. The black card works immediately after it is issued, while any balance on the beneficiary’s gold card will automatically be transferred and made available on the new card. Beneficiaries do not need to visit a Sassa office or complete any forms.
