Sarpatta Parambarai Round 2 goes on floors as director Pa Ranjith begins prequel

Director Pa Ranjith’s Sarpatta Parambarai Round 2 has officially gone on floors. The announcement was made by actor Arya on Monday, nearly three years after the sequel was first announced in April 2023. Ranjith, who is returning to direct the film, recently wrapped his upcoming project Vettuvam, which is slated for release in December.Arya shared a poster featuring a boxing ring on his official X account and wrote, “The origin of Sarpatta Parambarai begins.” Interestingly, he also tagged Pa Ranjith and actor Sayyeshaa, who is Arya’s wife, in the post. Arya’s announcement also confirms his return to the franchise, although the makers are yet to reveal details about the rest of the cast.While the project was announced as Sarpatta Parambarai 2, the new poster appears to confirm that the film will be a prequel to the 2021 sports drama. In a 2025 interview, Ranjith remained tight-lipped about whether the film would be a sequel or a prequel. “I can't reveal if it is a sequel or a prequel. But the era of the film is interesting. I am planning to make it a political drama. Having said that, the story will also have the elements that people loved in the first part, such as the boxing scenes and other characterisations.”With the film now officially on floors, further details about its period setting, storyline, returning cast and technical crew are awaited. Sarpatta Parambarai, which released directly on Prime Video in 2021 amid the Covid-19 pandemic and restrictions on theatrical screenings, was set in North Chennai and centred on the rivalry between the Idiyappa Parambarai and Sarpatta Parambarai boxing clans. The film explored the region’s boxing culture, family legacies and politics, while Arya played Kabilan, a boxer from the Sarpatta clan.
