Sanskrit varsity Syndicate revokes decision on unsigned exam tabulation registers, orders probe into lapses

The Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (file) | Photo Credit: KK MUSTAFAH The Syndicate of the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS) in Keralam has cancelled its July 17, 2026 decision to permit officials in the examination wing, who were found not to have signed the tabulation registers of exams held long back, to complete the mandatory process.A special Syndicate meeting convened by Vice-Chancellor Ciza Thomas on August 22, 2026 resolved to annul the earlier decision and entrusted the Syndicate sub-committee on Examinations to conduct a probe into the discrepancies.The committee will check whether there were differences in the entries made in the tabulation register and the final mark list awarded to the students, according to senior varsity officials.A preliminary assessment by the authorities found that the officials had not recorded their signatures in exams held since 2018. Those who had put their signatures on the tabulation register following the Syndicate decision on July 17 included those who had retired from service.Only a detailed probe will ascertain whether such a lapse had occurred before 2018, they said.The matter was included as item no. 31 in the minutes of the Syndicate meeting. It stated that the Syndicate resolved to entrust section officers of three sections in the examination wing to inform officials in the category of Assistant to Deputy Registrars, who have not signed in the tabulation registers, to record it.The initial assessment found that the erring officials were asked to record their signatures on the tabulation registers even before an official order was issued, confirming the Syndicate decision taken on July 17. A former senior official of the exam wing confirmed that there had been instances in the past where signatures were not recorded in the tabulation registers and attributed it to the gaps in the system.Petition before GovernorThe Save University Campaign Committee (SUCC) has urged Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to initiate a judicial probe into allegations of irregularities in the examination wing.In a petition submitted to the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of State universities, the committee alleged that it is a serious lapse on the part of the officials concerned for not recording their signatures on the tabulation register. Permitting retired officials to record their signatures on official documents amounted to violation of the rules and regulations of the university, it said in a communication.
