Sandra Bullock didn't announce cancer diagnosis

Claim: Sandra Bullock announced in July 2026 that after 18 years in remission from multiple myeloma, the rare blood cancer had returned. Rating: In late July 2026, social media users spread a rumor that actor Sandra Bullock announced that she has multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer, and that it had returned after "18 years in remission." Snopes readers contacted us to ask whether the rumor was true. Many of these claims, which circulated on platforms such as X and TikTok, included short videos supposedly of Bullock talking about loving her fans or feeling unloved. However, Bullock's official Instagram account did not contain any such announcement; her most recent post as of this writing is from July 10. It shows behind-the-scenes footage from filming "Practical Magic 2," a romantic fantasy film she's starring in that releases in September. Bullock has no other public social media accounts and has previously spoken out against social media scams, according to reputable reports. Furthermore, given Bullock's fame, if the story were true, reputable news outlets such as The Associated Press would have widely reported on it. However, searches using engines such as DuckDuckGo, Google and Yahoo found no such reports. Therefore, we've rated this claim false. We reached out to Bullock's representatives for comment and await a response. Many of the posts circulating this claim have since been taken down, making it difficult to track down where the rumor originated. However, the posts still online as of this writing came from social media accounts that have spread other false stories generated using artificial intelligence. Creators of such content capitalize on social media users' willingness to believe and share the made-up stories, profiting from advertising revenue. The videos of Bullock also had indicators of generative artificial intelligence, including the fake Bullock's monotone voice, distortions near the eyes when Bullock blinked and inconsistently appearing hair strands. The fact that the videos did not have to do with the content of the claim is also a common indicator of low-effort AI slop.
