Sandra Bullock Shares Why She Kept Bryan Randall’s ALS Battle PrivateSandra Bullock’s kids understood the gravity of Bryan Randall’s diagnosis. Before the Gravity actress’ boyfriend died in 2023 after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), she detailed how her son Louis, 16, and daughter Laila, 12, grappled with his illness, sharing how they were “completely aware” of what was going on. “I can see and be around just about anything,” Bullock said on the Aug. 17 episode of the SmartLess podcast, “but I had two young kids that were navigating it—especially a little girl who saw him as a father figure.” The 62-year-old also noted that her son had a totally different reaction to his mom’s caretaking of Randall than his sister did. “About two years before Bryan passed, he saw it was a dynamic that wasn't healthy for him to be around,” the Oscar winner continued. “He chose to just be there and support and help me on the things that were easy for [him]. But he smartly disengaged himself and said, ‘This is a safer space for me to sit.’ And I said, ‘Absolutely. You go, I got this.’” Beyond her son’s “very evolved” approach, Bullock emphasized that she didn’t want him to be forced to “become the man of the family at that age.” “My job is to be both at that time,” she shared. “And I want him to be a kid during a pandemic when everything is already f--ked anyway and people are suffering everywhere.” Meanwhile, the Miss Congeniality star—who dated Randall for eight years—said that her daughter was “more bonded until about six months out” from the photographer’s death. Jackson Lee/GC Images“Then she says, ‘Can you please say no when they call me over to go visit?’” she said. “And I said, ‘Absolutely, but if you do wanna go visit, I will come with you and I will be right there. And if you tap out, I am right there.’” As for how Bullock managed throughout Randall’s private battle with ALS? She spoke candidly about how she felt “isolated.” “He asked me not to share,” she recalled. “I know why he asked me not to.” However, the actress noted that keeping quiet while raising two young kids during the COVID-19 pandemic was “a trifecta that was pretty dark.” Eventually, Bullock confided in a few people, including Jennifer Aniston and SmartLess cohost Jason Bateman’s wife Amanda Anka Bateman—sharing a tear-filled moment with her friends.
