Sign in to your Android Police account Despite major advancements in battery technology, Samsung has stuck to using the same 5,000mAh cell on its flagship phones since the 2020 Galaxy S20 Ultra. However, it appears that after six long years, the company is finally ready to make amends and use a larger battery on its 2027 flagship: the Galaxy S27 Ultra. A GalaxyClub report claims that the Galaxy S27 Ultra will feature a battery with a rated capacity of 5,534mAh. That should translate into Samsung advertising it as a 5,700mAh or 5,800mAh cell. Either way, the additional capacity should significantly boost the S27 Ultra’s runtime, especially compared to the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Even the Galaxy S27 Pro, rumored to be a new addition to Samsung’s flagship lineup next year, will apparently pack a bigger battery than the S26 Ultra. That's despite the Pro being significantly smaller than the Ultra. It will reportedly use a 5,087mAh cell, which Samsung could market as a 5,200mAh battery. Samsung finally bumped the battery capacity on its foldables this year — the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Fold 8 — by switching to silicon-carbon anode cells. As a result, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra features a 5,000mAh cell, up from the 4,400mAh battery found on the Z Fold 7. And it managed to squeeze the larger cell without making the phone thicker or heavier. A much-needed battery upgrade for the Galaxy S lineup Samsung will likely rely on silicon-carbon anode cells again to increase the battery capacities of the Galaxy S27 Ultra and S27 Pro. Whatever the case, the larger battery capacities will be a welcome addition after years of the company sticking to the same 5,000mAh cell on its flagship phones. Other flagship Android phones now come with 6,000mAh or bigger batteries, again thanks to silicon-carbon anode cells. So, the S27 Ultra’s 5,534mAh cell won’t come close to matching its rivals’ capacities. Still, it should improve the phone’s battery life by a significant margin. The Galaxy S27 Pro could benefit even more from a bigger battery, particularly if it delivers Ultra-like endurance in a smaller body. There's no clarity on whether the base Galaxy S27 and S27+ will get bigger batteries. Samsung could keep the beefier batteries exclusive to its Pro and Ultra flagships to justify their higher price tag.
