Sam Axe's Burn Notice Revival Return & Potential New Movie Addressed By Bruce Campbell

Created by Matt Nix, the USA Network series primarily centered on Jeffrey Donovan as Michael Westen, a former CIA agent whose identity is suddenly burned, and he's left to try and rebuild his life as a private investigator in his hometown of Miami. While also trying to determine who burned him, Michael is largely helped with his cases by his ex-girlfriend, Gabrielle Anwar's Fiona, and longtime friend and former Navy SEAL Sam Axe, played by Campbell. First premiering in 2007, Burn Notice scored consistently high praise across its seven-season run, with praise particularly directed toward the show's dry sense of humor and fast-paced storytelling, while also securing Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama for Sharon Gless, and for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series. The show ultimately got to close out on its own terms, crafting a happy ending for Michael, Fiona, Sam and Coby Bell's Jesse, some have held out hopes for a revival. Now, in an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns for his directorial return with Ernie & Emma, Campbell has weighed in on the chances of a Burn Notice revival return. The star was quick to express that the studio and producers could bring the spy comedy show "back easily," denoting that there "are tons of international dirtbags out there" who would make for great targets for Michael and his friends: Bruce Campbell: I mean, the world is even more complicated now than it was before. All the main characters are still alive. Yeah, you could easily do it. When presented with the idea of directing either an episode or a proper Burn Notice movie, Campbell confessed that he has "all kinds of ideas" for how the show could continue, but that "I don't need to direct these silly things," chuckling as he acknowledged "they have very qualified people" to helm it. He concluded by saying it would "be a fun one to revisit," given he "enjoyed that process" as a supporting player instead of the leading role. This isn't the first time Campbell has addressed the possibility of a Burn Notice revival since the show ended, having similarly confirmed near the end of 2023 that he was open to it and wanted to see more of Michael and Fiona's lives as parents after the original series finale. At the time, he also shared his interest in a revival of his cult favorite Weird Western classic The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., teasing ideas to take the show into the '20s and answering some of its biggest unanswered questions. If a revival were to happen, Burn Notice certainly wouldn't be the first series to expand beyond a series finale that largely brought its proceedings to a close. USA Network, themselves, have successfully done so on multiple occasions, including the multiple Psych films, with a fourth installment currently in development, and Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie, which scored an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Television Movie, and reports have indicated talks are underway for more. Given Campbell seems to allude to a preference for being a supporting player on the show, it does seem unlikely that another Sam Axe-focused Burn Notice movie will happen in the future, nor will he take the helm for a revival. However, with him still remaining interested in bringing the spy series back, it will be interesting to see if any of his ideas come to fruition in the future.
