Sainsbury’s confirms it’s returning to UK village for first time since 1959 – and it’s opening next week

SAINSBURY’S has confirmed it is returning to a scenic UK village after nearly 70 years. Shoppers will not have long to wait to see what’s on offer either as the store opens in just over a week. It also marks the end of a restoration project to bring the Grade II-listed building in the village back into use. Sainsbury’s arrival will also mark the company’s first return to Blackheath since its historic store in the village shut in 1959. The restoration was delivered jointly with the building’s landlord Morden College, which described the upgrade as a “vital enhancement”. A Sainsbury’s spokesperson told MyLondon: “We’re delighted to be returning to Blackheath with the opening of our new Sainsbury’s Blackheath Tranquil Vale Local later this month, decades after our historic store Blackheath Village store closed its doors in 1959. “We’ve been preparing our investment in the new store location, which is itself a historic Grade II listed building, for years and we’re now getting everything ready to unveil it to our customers. “We’re excited to showcase some of the best that Sainsbury’s convenience stores have to offer and we look forward to serving the local community again for many more years to come.” Most read in Money Sainsbury’s operates more than 1,480 stores across the UK.
