In Kyiv, one person was killed and two others wounded, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (SES). Fires erupted in the capital’s Sviatoshynskyi district, where a five-story non-residential building and a garage complex were set ablaze, while a market caught fire in the Obolonskyi district. In the surrounding Kyiv region, a private home was destroyed, leaving five people injured, including a child. Photos released by Kyiv’s emergency service showed firefighters spraying water into heavily damaged buildings and working through piles of rubble as rescue operations continued. Lviv also came under attack, with multiple explosions reported across the city. Residential high-rises on Paton and Vyhovskoho streets caught fire, injuring 15 people, 14 of whom were hospitalized, regional governor Maksym Kozytskyi said. Rescue crews continued searching through the rubble as residents joined efforts to clear debris. “People remain trapped beneath the collapsed building on Paton Street. The rescue operation is ongoing,” Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said. Last month was the deadliest for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022, according to the United Nations, as Moscow increased its missile and drone attacks against populated areas. Ukraine has also stepped up retaliatory strikes against targets inside Russia in recent months, aiming in part to increase pressure on Moscow to return to negotiations after nearly four and a half years of war. The latest barrage came hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia was preparing another mass aerial assault and urged Ukraine’s allies to accelerate deliveries of air-defense missiles. “This primarily concerns the United States and those partners that have missiles for Patriot systems and can support our defense,” Zelensky said. “Every partner knows what is needed and fully understands the consequences of delay.” In early July, US President Donald Trump said he intended to allow Ukraine to produce surface-to-air missiles as Russia intensified its ballistic missile attacks. Ukraine has relied heavily on US-made Patriot air-defense systems, the only systems currently capable of reliably intercepting some Russian ballistic missiles, but Kyiv remains critically short of PAC-3 interceptor missiles.
