Russian missiles and drones struck Kyiv and nearby districts overnight, killing 15 people. The attack highlighted Ukraine's strained air defences and Russia's widening focus on civilian logistics sites.Image used for representational purposes onlyRussian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region killed at least 15 people and injured 42 others overnight into Wednesday, Ukraine's state emergency service said. Fourteen people were killed and 27 injured in the wider Kyiv region, while one person was killed and 15 injured in the capital. The attack was the latest in a series of large-scale Russian ballistic missile strikes that have become near-routine this summer. Ukraine has a limited stockpile of interceptor missiles for the US-made Patriot systems, the only air defence system it has that can shoot down ballistic missiles, making large volleys like Wednesday's difficult to stop, even as Ukraine has stepped up deep strikes on Russian oil refineries and energy infrastructure. In the wider Kyiv region, fires broke out at multiple locations in Brovary, Bucha and Fastiv districts, the emergency service said. Large warehouse fires burned in the city of Brovary and the villages of Velyka Dymerka, Kvitneve and Peremoha. A fire involving vehicles at an enterprise in Fastiv district was put out. In Bucha district, crews battled a warehouse fire in the village of Chaiky after extinguishing a separate fire at a logistics facility in Sofiivska Borshchahivka. In Kyiv, emergency crews put out fires sparked by the strikes in the Obolonskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Holosiivskyi and Desnianskyi districts, the Kyiv City Military Administration said. Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukraine's president on defence technology development, said the war of attrition had entered a new phase. "The enemy is attacking everything indiscriminately - retail warehouses, food storage facilities, logistics hubs, enterprises, building materials warehouses," he said on Facebook. The overnight assault on Kyiv and its surrounding region left 15 people dead and 42 injured, with emergency teams responding to multiple fires at warehouses, logistics facilities and other sites across the affected districts. With PTI Inputs - EndsPublished By: India Today Web Desk Published On: Aug 5, 2026 11:46 IST
