Russian Strike Torches Historic Zaporizhzhia Heritage University

A Russian attack on Monday morning burned a historic building in southern Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia National University (ZNU). The university’s press office said the institution’s Building 3 “sustained a direct hit” by a Russian drone at around 3 a.m. and shared photos of roaring flames inside.JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official. “ZNU Building No. 3 is a cultural heritage site. Within its walls, years of study, meetings, lectures, and significant moments of university life unfolded,” the university wrote on Facebook. According to New Voice of Ukraine, the building, which was the oldest within the university complex, was built in 1903 and originally served as a women’s gymnasium. In another update, the university said “a significant part” of the building burned down, and nearby Buildings 4 and 5 also sustained damage. It said no one was injured in the attack. It said plans are underway to restore the building but described it as “challenging.”“A challenging restoration process lies ahead. But we believe we can bring it back to life,” it added.On Monday morning, the city’s acting mayor Rehina Kharchenko said over 15 houses were damaged by the Russian attack.“More than 15 houses were damaged as a result of a long night attack on Zaporizhzhia. More than 600 windows were broken. Several apartments are no longer suitable for living. One of the city’s shopping centers burned down to the ground,” Kharchenko wrote in her Monday morning briefing.
