Russian Strike on Dnipropetrovsk Region Injures 1, Cuts Power for 55,000

One person was injured after Russian forces launched nearly 50 strikes across five districts of the Dnipropetrovsk region on Wednesday, Aug. 5, cutting power to nearly 55,000 residents in the Nikopol area alone. Regional military administration head Oleksandr Hanzha reported the attacks in a statement on Telegram, detailing strikes carried out with drones, artillery, and at least one aerial bomb.JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official. “Power engineers are already working,” Hanzha said, adding that “they are doing everything possible to restore electricity to residents’ homes as soon as possible.” Nikopol area bears brunt of the strike The heaviest damage occurred in the Nikopol district, where Russian forces targeted the city of Nikopol, along with the Marhanets, Pokrovske, Myriv, Tomakivka, and Chervonohryhorivka communities. The strikes damaged a business, a store, a gymnasium, an apartment building, private homes, vehicles, and local infrastructure. Nikopol has remained one of the hardest hit areas since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, with the district facing near-daily bombardment. On Monday, Aug. 3, four people were injured in the district alone, including a 33-year-old woman who was hospitalized in moderate condition. These consistent attacks on the Nikopol district prompted Hanzha to build a school shelter in the frontline community, bringing 120 students and teachers back to class as of July 1. The construction reportedly took three months and cost approximately Hr. 21 million ($472,500), with funding provided by the Czech Republic and the local community. The latest strike was far from an isolated incident, as Russian forces have continued to carry out similar mass strikes – ranging from 40 to 70 attacks in a single day – on the region weekly. In June, Russian forces struck five districts of the Dnipropetrovsk region more than 40 times in a single day, prompting Hanzha to convene an emergency Defense Council to strengthen evacuations and reinforce defenses across the region. Casualties and damage in other districts as well In the Synelnykove district, the Vasylkivka community recorded the attack’s only reported casualty, while civilian structures also sustained damage. Farther west, fires broke out in the Vakulove and Zelenodolsk communities in the Kryvyi Rih area following the barrage, while a separate blaze erupted in the Novopokrivka community within the Dnipro district. Russian forces also struck the Verkhivtseve community in the Kamianske district, though authorities did not provide additional details on the damage. Russia continues to conduct strikes on civilians, violating international humanitarian law under the Geneva Conventions. On Thursday, July 30, a Russian missile strike on the village of Radushne in the Kryvyi Rih district killed an entire family of 10 people, including two parents, seven children, and an 18-month-old grandson. Restoration efforts underway Ukrainian energy and medical crews mobilized quickly following the outages, working to restore service to the tens of thousands affected in the Nikopol area. However, authorities provided no specific timeline for full restoration. Kyiv Post is Ukraine’s first and oldest English news organization, reporting since 1995.
