Russian Jet-Powered Drone Hits Ternopil as Assault Targets Zhytomyr Region

A Russian jet-powered drone hit the western city of Ternopil early Tuesday, Sept. 29, with debris falling on an industrial facility, as overnight attacks also damaged civilian and transportation infrastructure in the neighboring Zhytomyr region. Taras Pastukh, head of the Ternopil Regional Military Administration (OVA), subsequently reported that a jet-powered drone was moving toward the region before changing course toward the regional center. He urged residents to immediately move to shelters. Local Telegram channels later reported sounds resembling explosions in Ternopil. Ternopil OVA subsequently reported the consequences of the attack: “This morning, a jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicle [UAV] attack was launched against the Ternopil region, specifically the regional center. As a result of the enemy [drone] being hit, debris fell onto the grounds of an industrial facility. There have been no reports of casualties so far.” On Aug. 18, a Russian jet-powered Shahed flew approximately 900 kilometers (559 miles) from Crimea into western Ukraine, passing through several regions before reaching the area of Dubno in the Rivne region. It was the first recorded flight of a jet-powered Shahed into western Ukrainian airspace. The attack came amid Russian assaults on four cities in the neighboring Zhytomyr region overnight on Sept. 28-29. Rescue teams and emergency services were working at sites where drones and their debris fell. As of the latest reports, there were no fatalities or injuries from the attacks.Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy reported power outages in several regions after Russian attacks damaged energy infrastructure.Some consumers in the Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Donetsk, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions were left without electricity due to the attacks and resulting damage to energy facilities.Energy workers are carrying out repairs in areas where the security situation allows. No electricity consumption restrictions were forecast for Sept. 29.A separate emergency power outage affected central Rivne, according to Oleksandr Koval, head of the Rivne OVA.Energy crews were working to restore power to homes in the affected area.
