Russian Drone Strike on Kharkiv Train Kills 1, Injures 4

A Russian drone struck an electric passenger train in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region on Sunday, Aug. 23, killing one passenger and injuring four others. Minister of Restoration, Infrastructure, and Transport Mykola Kalashnyk reported on Telegram that the drone hit a Lozova-Kharkiv train at the Lymanivka station. While the majority of the passengers and the train crew moved to a safe distance, Kalashnyk noted that some individuals remained close to the railway infrastructure, which led to the fatal consequences when the drone struck. “Today, Russia attacked this electric train for a second time while rescuers were working,” Kalashnyk added. “Fortunately, there were no casualties.” The minister urged passengers to strictly follow the instructions of railway workers during evacuations and to avoid remaining near rolling stock due to the persistent threat of “double-tap” attacks. According to Kalashnyk, Russian forces targeted Ukraine’s railway infrastructure five times on National Flag Day. He provided broader statistics on the continuous bombardment of the transport network, stating that Russia has attacked the Ukrainian railway 1,534 times since the beginning of this year alone. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russian strikes have damaged 249 railcars and 492 locomotives. Over the course of the war, 52 Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways) employees have been killed and 317 injured while performing their duties. Double-tap drone strike on passenger train in Odesa region The fatal strike in the Kharkiv region followed a similar attack earlier on Sunday in the Odesa region, where a jet-powered “Shahed” drone struck the locomotive of passenger train No. 147, traveling from Zhytomyr to Odesa. Ukrzaliznytsia Chairman Oleksandr Pertsovskyi confirmed that the railway’s monitoring team announced an evacuation in advance, halting the train on the tracks. All 593 passengers, including 15 children, as well as the train and locomotive crews, were safely evacuated before the impact. Kalashnyk and Oleg Kipper, head of the Odesa Regional State Administration, later confirmed that Russian forces struck the locomotive a second time following the initial hit. No casualties were reported in the Odesa region attack. Local authorities and the State Emergency Service (SES) subsequently transported all passengers to the city of Odesa via buses.
