Russia Strikes Kyiv, Kharkiv Again as Weeks of Attacks Kill Dozens

Russian forces struck Kharkiv with guided aerial bombs early Monday, Sept. 28, hitting an apartment building and injuring 22 people, including eight children, Ukrainian officials said. Six other children – aged between 3 and 15 – were treated at the scene. The Russian attack damaged several residential buildings in Kharkiv’s Kyivskyi and Saltivskyi districts. One guided aerial bomb struck an apartment building directly, damaging the second and third floors. Emergency crews, medics and police were working at the scene. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said the city was struck twice overnight, with Russian forces using guided aerial bombs. Four injured in Kyiv Russia also launched an overnight attack on Kyiv, injuring four people and damaging buildings across four districts, according to the State Emergency Service. In the Podilskyi district, a non-residential building was damaged and caught fire, with part of its roof destroyed. A subsequent strike shattered windows in a nearby residential building, injuring three people. In the Holosiivskyi district, a Russian drone struck a private two-story home, injuring one person. Fires also broke out at office buildings in the Pecherskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts. Two people were killed and three injured in the wider Kyiv region after a Russian drone strike, according to Ukrainian authorities. A house, grain storage facility and car were also damaged. The overnight attacks followed Russian strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding area on the evening of Sept. 27. A Russian strike hit a 16-story apartment building in Kyiv’s Podilskyi district at the level of the seventh floor. Preliminary reports said there were casualties. Russia also struck the Stolychniy market in Sofiivska Borshchahivka, killing people and injuring nearly 10 others, according to Ukrainian authorities. Earlier that evening, a Russian Shahed drone crashed onto a road in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district. Kyiv under relentless Russian attacks The latest strikes come amid a sustained Russian aerial campaign against Kyiv that has repeatedly disrupted life in the capital since late August. The attacks have repeatedly disrupted public transport, businesses and daily life. During alerts, above-ground Metro services are suspended, while underground stations operate as shelters. Businesses including post offices, shopping malls, cinemas and gyms can also suspend operations under their safety procedures. There was a brief lull in strikes on Kyiv in early September. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a three-day pause beginning at midnight on Sept. 5, coinciding with the visit of US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who arrived in Kyiv on Sept. 6. The attacks resumed afterward and have continued through the past several weeks, repeatedly forcing residents into shelters, disrupting transport and damaging homes, offices and other civilian infrastructure. The toll was particularly heavy on Friday, Sept. 25. Russian attacks killed eight people and injured 59 in Kyiv, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Twenty-five of those injured were hospitalized, with one in serious condition. One of those killed was a 14-year-old boy. Since Saturday, Sept. 26, Russian attacks had killed two people and injured at least 14 others in Kyiv and the surrounding region as of Sept. 27, with apartment and office buildings, a shopping mall, warehouse and data center among the sites damaged.
