The footage shows Brand and Perry on the red carpet at the 2010 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. As the pair walk down the carpet, they’re approached by a GMTV interviewer who asks what they made of the Academy Awards. Brand begins to talk before Perry interrupts him, jokingly shouting over him: ‘You didn’t watch it!’ Disarmed, Brand then begins to make a joke while Perry laughs. The reporter then says to Perry: ‘You just put him in it right now,’ to which Brand replies rather seriously: ‘I did watch the Oscars’. Perry then states: ‘I call him on his b*******,’ after which Brand solemnly says: ‘Don’t swear,’ reminding his wife that this is on in England. As the reporter asks Perry who she was happy to see win, Brand can be seen brandishing a pin badge or card of some kind that reads ‘Obey’. After this, Perry goes quiet, while Brand shares his thoughts on the night. Eventually, the reporter attempts to interrupt Brand and ask Perry for her thoughts, but the disgraced comedian continues talking. When Brand stops talking, the reporter asks Perry: ‘Katy, how do you deal with this guy?’ The video has concerned some viewers(Picture Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic) A clearly awkward Perry then replied: ‘He’s actually hilarious,’ to which the reporter shot back: ‘I’m glad you find him funny.’ The short clip has gone viral on X since Brand’s conviction for rape earlier this week, and at the time of writing, it has been viewed more than three million times and received 12,000 likes. In the replies beneath the video, viewers have commented on how the interaction had taken on a more sinister aspect following Brand’s conviction. ‘What a bizarre interaction,’ wrote @euvioasis while others labelled it ‘disgusting’. Russell Brand: Trial verdicts at a glance Found guilty of four offences: One count of rape. Three counts of sexual assault. Raped a 21-year-old fan after meeting her at a 2009 stand-up show at the Hammersmith Apollo. Sexually assaulted a Channel 4 worker in 2009 after she was forced to give him a massage. Kissed and groped a Capital Radio worker in a corridor in 2005. Groped an MTV worker at a Soho bar in 2004. Found not guilty of three charges: Two counts of rape. One count of attempted indecent assault. The jury cleared him of raping an MTV worker in a toilet in 2004. He was also cleared of raping a woman he met at a cabaret show during the 1999 Labour Party conference in Bournemouth. He was found not guilty of attempting to drag an MTV worker into a toilet to indecently assault her in 2001. Sentencing: The sentencing hearing is scheduled for Monday, November 9th Brand’s barrister applied for the comedian to spend time with his family before being taken into custody, but the judge ruled that Brand would remain behind bars until Monday. The trial: The trial took place at Southwark Crown Court and lasted nearly four weeks. The jury deliberated for eight and a half hours before reaching its verdicts. Brand showed no emotion as the verdicts were delivered. ‘He was annoyed because she was getting more attention than him,’ suggested @Furryjumper. ‘His face when Katie was addressed first.’ ‘The reporter also didn’t acknowledge Brand when he first walked up & he didn’t like it,’ agreed @Reners18. A lot of people, however, were curious about the use of the ‘Obey’ badge, which many interpreted as Brand asserting control over the singer in public. ‘WTH is up with that obey sticker? Is that a real thing?’ asked @irdygirdy, a question posed by multiple viewers. Obey was an anti-capitalist fashion brand (Picture: Ethan Miller/WireImage) ‘He used to use an “obey” tag on Katy Perry every time she wasn’t agreeing with him,’ noted @notwhomstfarted. Others noted that the tag is actually from a clothing brand called Obey, created by street artist Shepard Fairey. ‘Obey was a brand at the time,’ explained @AdaLovelaceAB. ‘Not sure I’m getting the significance of it here?’ ‘I’m not defending Brand, but OBEY is an art project/street brand. It represents anti-authoritarianism, anti-capitalism, and is a critique of propaganda,’ noted @Maeby_Moon. ‘Brand was likely flashing this because, at this stage of his career, he was posing as an anti-Hollywood bad boy philosopher.’ Brand was found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
