Russell Brand is found guilty of rape and sexual assault, faces ‘significant’ prison sentence

See more of our coverage in your search results. Russell Brand was found guilty of rape and three counts of sexual assault in his London criminal trial on Wednesday. The disgraced British comedian, 51, was found not guilty of two other rape charges and a count of attempted indecent assault, according to the BBC. Brand was remanded in custody after the verdict, which took the jury three days to reach. Getty Images REUTERS Judge Justice Bennathan told Brand he will be given a “significant custodial term.” “You’ve been convicted of a number of offenses including rape,” the judge told Brand. “The consequence of that is inevitably a significant custodial term.” Shortly after the verdict, the judge also reportedly told the court, “Sit down Mr Brand,” and said that the case was “very well planned.” Brand will be sentenced on Monday. The “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” actor “stood straight and still” in his seat in the courtroom when the verdict was announced, per Sky News. His wife Laura, who supported him during his trial, was reportedly emotional when they learned Brand’s fate. The Met Police told Sky News they are investing Brand for other rape allegations made by two women. “The suspect has previously been interviewed under caution in connection with the allegations,” a spokesperson for Met Police said. “Files have been submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service in relation to both complainants.” The spokesperson added, “Detectives remain in close contact with prosecutors as enquiries continue and further investigative work is carried out.” Brand was on trial for seven charges — three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault — stemming from alleged incidents involving six women between 1999 and 2009.
