Russell Brand Found Guilty of Rape, 3 Counts of Sexual Assault

Russell Brand Charged With 2 More Counts of Rape and Sexual AssaultRussell Brand’s legal battle has reached a conclusion. On Nov. 5, a London court found the 51-year-old was convicted on one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. After deliberating for over eight hours, according to multiple outlets, the jury found Brand guilty of raping a fan in 2009 after meeting at one of his shows in London, of groping an MTV worker in 2004, kissing and groping another woman at her workplace in 2009 and of sexually assaulting another woman in 2009. Brand—who had pleaded not guilty to all charges—was cleared of two separate counts of rape and one count of indecent assault. The presiding judge Joel Bennathan, according to The New York Times, said he would sentence the Forgetting Sarah Marshall actor to “significant custodial time,” while also denying him bail. British sentencing guidelines for rape, per the outlet, carry a maximum sentence of life in prison, while the average prison term for such a conviction is four to 19 years. Brand’s legal battle began in April 2025, when he was charged with one count of rape, one count of oral rape, two counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault by the London Metropolitan Police. The events in question allegedly occurred between 1999 and 2009. In December 2025, the actor was also charged with one additional count of rape and one more sexual assault charge, the London Metropolitan Police confirmed in a press release. At the time, Brand—father to three with wife Laura Brand—shared a video to social media urging viewers “to understand the truth of my situation and scenario,” though he didn’t address the allegations directly. Neil Mockford/Getty Images“I pray Lord, anyone that I’ve harmed or hurt in my years of mindlessness and sin would be healed, Lord,” he said in the clip. “And I pray, Lord, for the absolute truth of who I am to be abundantly revealed.” Despite the convictions, however, Brand’s legal journey may not be done. According to the New York Times, citing an emailed statement following the verdicts, a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said police had questioned Brand about two additional accusations of rape, submitting the files to prosecutors. During the trial, per the outlet, Brand did not deny that some of the encounters had occurred, though he claimed every act had been consensual. Jeff Spicer/Getty ImagesHe reportedly told jurors, per the NYT, that while he “misused” his fame to obtain sexual encounters, he had always obtained consent, saying doing so had been “fundamental, essential, necessary.” E! News has reached out to Brand’s legal team for comment but has not yet heard back.Following Brand’s conviction, Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy released a statement praising the verdict. “As his profile grew, so too did his sense of entitlement,” Furphy said, per CNN. “I hope this conviction sends a clear message that no one is above the law, no matter how famous or powerful they may be.”For the latest breaking news updates, click here to download the E!
