It has now emerged it came a day after he was sacked over emails with nurse Letby in 2016 about a baby she was accused of trying to kill. The anonymous 53-year-old, described at her trial as her “boyfriend”, was found slumped in his car at a retail park 20 miles from his Cheshire home. He was rushed to intensive care at Whiston Hospital, Merseyside, but died nine days later on July 3 — eight years to the day since Letby’s first arrest in 2018. The doctor had later told an inquiry he had been “maybe manipulated” by Letby into giving her information about babies she had attacked. He was hauled before a three-day disciplinary hearing where it was understood their email exchanges were deemed to be a breach of patient confidentiality. The doctor reportedly also faced allegations of inappropriately accessing medical records but these were quashed at tribunal. In 2024, Letby was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill seven others at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016. She called the doctor her “best friend” and “love” in notes found at her home, and the pair swapped over 1,300 Facebook messages. Inmates and officers read the paper and it was the talk of her jail unit very quickly. Staff have been keeping really close tabs on her.” Cheshire Police — who have faced criticism over their handling of the case — refused to provide usual details after the doctor’s death, and a listing appeared to have been removed from the coroner’s website. She wept when he entered the dock to give evidence against her, doing so from behind a screen to protect his anonymity. She later admitted he had made a “social” visit to her home. They met for meals and coffees and went for walks. Letby wrote his name repeatedly next to love hearts. She wrote: “My best friend . . . LOVE . . . I loved you and I think you knew that . . . I wanted you to stand by me but you didn’t.” Letby lost two bids to challenge her convictions. But the Criminal Cases Review Commission is considering evidence presented by a panel of doctors claiming natural causes and poor care were to blame.
